It’s imperative that patients be educated on all decisions involving their health and wellness, which includes selecting a surgeon. Not exactly sure what it means to be a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon? Read more about the requirements for board certification below.

What are the Requirements?

Surgeons who wish to become Board Certified must complete a series of requirements set by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). In most cases, surgeons seeking Board Certification have already completed all training and residency associated with medical school requirements. Any residency must be approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and it must be in one of the two major specialties related to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery—otolaryngology/head-and-neck surgery or plastic surgery. After this step, a surgeon must complete the following requirements:

  •    Earn prior certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, the American  Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of    Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in otolaryngology/head-and-neck surgery or plastic surgery.
  •    Be in practice for at least two years.
  •    Present 100 operative reports reviewed and accepted by a peer-review    committee.
  •    Pass both a written and oral exam.
  •    Operate in an accredited facility.
  •    Hold proper licenses and follow the ABFPRS Code of Ethics.

What Does Being Board Certified Provide?

Did you know that it’s technically legal for any doctor to perform a facial plastic surgery procedure? Knowing whether or not a surgeon is Board Certified is an important piece of information for someone seeking a professional plastic surgery procedure.

A Board Certified surgeon has shown that he or she is a source of knowledge and expertise in their specialty. Board Certification allows those surgeons who are the most competent, trustworthy, and knowledgeable in the field of facial plastic surgery to be recognized.
