Cosmetic ear surgery, or otoplasty, is an option for patients whose ears stick out excessively from their head or those who are unhappy with the size or shape of their ears. Otoplasty is performed on both adults and children to balance the appearance of the ears and face. When performed by Dr. Paik, this procedure can result in dramatic improvements in confidence and self-esteem.

When should ear surgery be performed?

Depending on the age of the patient, otoplasty can be performed at different stages of life. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon for children with protruding ears to experience teasing. In such a circumstance, otoplasty performed before school age can have tremendous social and psychological benefits for a child. The child’s ears must be fully grown before the otoplasty can be performed, which usually occurs by age five or six. Adults on the other hand may have more flexibility in terms of timeline. Adults unhappy with the size, angle, or shape of their ears can still receive a boost to their appearance and self-esteem with the results of cosmetic ear surgery. Many of our adult patients frequently elect for otoplasty in combination with other cosmetic facial procedures.

How is ear surgery performed?

Otoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia or in conjunction with other facial procedures. Surgery begins with a well-hidden incision in the natural fold just behind the ear. Based on the shaping needs of the patient, cartilage and skin may be removed and molded with sutures as needed. Recovery typically takes about one full week as long as post-surgery instructions are followed.
